Currently, Ha Tien is not the capital of Kien Giang province, but it is Rach Gia City. However, Ha Tien was once the capital of the former Ha Tien province during the French colonial period before 1956. In particular, Ha Tien was the seat of the entire Ha Tien province during the Nguyen Dynasty. The area of Ha Tien then consisted of Kien Giang, Ca Mau and parts of present-day Hau Giang, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu. Ha Tien today is a class 3 city.
